Before You Start Treatment

Understand how Molnupiravir and CaliciPro™ work, what really causes stomatitis, and the full set of supports a successful treatment needs.

01The Root Cause of Stomatitis

Our working hypothesis is that stomatitis is essentially an overactive immune response triggered by chronic viral infection. For reasons that aren't yet fully understood, the cat's immune system can't completely clear feline calicivirus (FCV) from the body, which keeps the immune system in a constant state of activation.

The mainstream view treats stomatitis as an autoimmune disease, but we believe that may only be the surface of the problem. The real underlying cause is likely the persistent presence of the virus, which keeps stimulating the immune system until it becomes dysregulated.

Over time this disrupts normal immune balance and keeps the immune system on high alert indefinitely. Eventually, immune cells may start mistakenly attacking the cat's own oral tissues — producing the severe inflammation we see in stomatitis.

02How Molnupiravir and CaliciPro™ Work

By using Molnupiravir and CaliciPro™, our goal is to lower the viral load in the body and reduce the continuous stimulation that virus puts on the immune system. Once that viral pressure drops, the immune system has a real chance to gradually return to balance — and only then can the chronic inflammation truly subside.

Course length:Treatment typically continues for about 12–20 weeks.

03Antivirals Alone Aren't Enough

It's important to understand that stomatitis is a very complex disease. Beyond the virus itself, it usually comes bundled with:

So antivirals alone usually aren't enough. In most cases the protocol also needs:

04Why Dental Health Matters

Dental issues are particularly important. Many stomatitis cats also have severe tooth-root disease, periodontitis, or tooth resorption hiding alongside the virus. These damaged teeth keep feeding a chronic inflammatory source — so even if the virus is controlled, the stomatitis can persist or relapse.

05Isolate in Multi-Cat Homes

Isolation in multi-cat households is also very important.

Based on more than two years of cases, ongoing contact with other cats can reduce treatment effectiveness and increase the risk of relapse. FCV is highly contagious and spreads through droplets, saliva, shared food bowls, and grooming.

Ideally:Keep the treated cat isolated during the entire course of treatment.

06An Honest Note from Us

Finally, we want to be honest with you: this is still a relatively new direction of treatment. We've gathered a large number of successful cases and more vets are coming around to this approach, but there's still a lot about the mechanism that hasn't been fully researched.

That said, the real-world results we've seen are striking. We've watched many stomatitis cats — including some whose teeth had already all been extracted and whose disease was previously uncontrollable — improve dramatically once they started antiviral therapy.
